When events warrant an interpretation counter to or supporting of the facts, depending on what needs to be accomplished to shape public belief or opinion, certain techniques may be used to achieve the objective of creating a narrative which is considered factual by the majority.
In the interpretation of the phenomena of UAP/UFO this is frequently used in attempts to debunk, reinforce and alter perception of sightings with the goal of creating mass acceptance of events as fact. A good example is the Roswell, New Mexico incident – a case where even today competing narratives have sprung up to debunk the crashed saucer idea which most Americans associate the name of the city with – so ingrained into the popular culture/mass consciousness this idea has become.
These techniques to create and shape narrative are of course applicable to other concerns of society. Politics, business, military, history and societal conventions all require direction through shaping of perception and opinion. Effecting an emotional response is often required to compel the population to alter behaviors in the desired manner, whether it be switching from one brand of toothpaste to another or agreeing that a certain war is necessary.
Any narrative, can be burrowed into the consciousness of the public using some basic tenants.
- The desired message is a unified narrative
- The unified narrative is repeated incessantly
- The incessant repeat of the unified narrative is broadcast over all communication mediums – thus the mediums, print, television, social media, radio, internet, function as a force multiplier; even if an individual isn’t paying attention, eventually he or she will receive the message either directly or by social osmosis – word of mouth, likely from more than one friend or family member
- Thus the unified narrative is repeated to achieve a saturation effect in the public mind, the goal is to make the narrative accepted as factual and ever present as an idea or event that must be given consideration by individuals, i.e. it must become something that is frequently foremost given thought to by people
- The narrative most compel a certain desired behavior from the public, this can be a vote, a purchase decision, recognition of new societal norms, mores or recollection of a historic event
- Dissenting or opposing viewpoints or information counter to the unified narrative must be either discredited or censored – the elimination of a competing idea or narrative is paramount in order to achieve a dominant acceptance in the public psyche
