It strikes me that those who are engaged in a “life of the mind” are naturally drawn to the pursuit or at least interest in the UFO phenomenon. And why wouldn’t it? When one sits down to truly ponder, logically, the evidence and other attributes of the phenomena it presents perhaps the greatest puzzle known to humanity. It can be no accident that Hynek, Vallee and now contemporaries such as Bigelow and Prasad have become obsessed with a lifelong pursuit of discovering the nature of the phenomenon. And surely there are others, as I have heard, in Silicon Valley and elsewhere whose pursuits remain under the radar. This is the modern Invisible College D.W. Palsulka has spoken about and written about in her book, American Cosmic.
Absent formal technical training, the naturally curious mind also has its intellectual gaze drawn to the phenomenon. It is a puzzle too myriad and tantalizing to ignore. People with great observational and investigatory skills are drawn to the UFO siren call because it presents an ever changing combination of evidentiary truth that ultimately only functions as a thin veneer covering the actual amorphous complexity of the enigma that one finds when the evidence leads to more contradictory or explanation-defying variables. Further clouding the truth is the researcher’s inherent subconscious and deliberate biases. There is danger in our human tendencies, some of which manifest themselves in confirmation bias and at worst, deliberate deception to further a wish-fueled or ego-driven agenda.
The best research follows the data rigorously. As is often the case in Ufology, even the data can lead you into avenues where only speculation can be the tonic applied to phenomena that wounds our understanding of reality. And that is fine, speculation is our useful tool for developing new avenues of research, data collection and test scenarios.
When you strip away the cheap emotional rewards of media buzz, sensationalism and other distractions, the study and research of Ufology is a truly fascinating and illuminating subject. It is a handsomely intriguing proposition, this UFO business.
