Opinion: The Tide is Turning

I recently noted how interest in UFOs is likely to attract those who are living a “life of the mind.” Royal, nation, economic and military duties could qualify as requiring the qualities of a life of the mind so it is not surprising to learn that the recently departed Prince Philip of England had an extensive UFO library. He was known to have met with witnesses too. By the accounts read, the subject was of major interest to him for much of his life.

Curious people, sometimes trained in analytical or critical thinking skills are drawn to mysteries that display a preponderance of viable evidence. Unfortunately, due to decades of government designed and media enabled misinformation/propaganda directed toward ufology and its enthusiasts one is subject to frequent ridicule or wariness from those who hold little to no interest. Think of it this way – in polite conversation one can discuss SETI legitimately with strangers, even the yes/no question of belief in aliens. But once you delve into the meat of the subject along the lines of the ETH vs IDH, quantum and psychological aspects and its existential implications for the whole of humanity then you are likely to quickly find yourself standing alone. In the writer’s case, it has contributed to the loss of relationships. “He’s into all that weird stuff.” Yes, forgive my curiosity regarding a phenomenon that apparently alters the fabric of our consensus reality. I find it infinitely more intellectually rewarding than who won the latest sing-off competition on TV or that new fizzy alcohol drink.

Of course, Ufology hasn’t done itself too many favors either with the multitude of charlatans and hoaxsters who have permeated the field for decades and continue to do so today. But this is unfortunately now true of almost all fields of study and reporting that have become tainted with mandatory templates of political thought and agenda. Ufology, left in the dark, or worse, repeatedly ridiculed as tin-foil hat territory for decades and shunned by most serious scientific research has been left to its own devices for years. If you want to find a DIY community, look at Ufology. By and large the more legitimate aspects of the community have said to science, “If you are not going to research this seriously, we will!” And they have done so with varying degrees of success.

It has been a long slog, but the paradigm may be changing. We are finally now in the zone of legitimacy given by the mainstream media. Despite their faults and past sins, they play an important role in changing attitudes and giving you the floor at a cocktail party without fear of haranguing. Culturally uncool things loved by a few, misunderstood or shorn by the majority, have a way of reversing their perception by the masses until it seems everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. The rock group Rush or cryptocurrencies come to mind. For once, the skeptics can play defense.

The coming Pentagon report on UAP research may be a watershed moment. The recent new leaks of photos and videos taken by military personnel ahead of the report lend credence (probably by design) to the growing momentum of disclosure. We’ve already had tacit disclosure as has been detailed here. Will we get official disclosure? Probably not, but wordsmithing by government PR personnel is an artform they have had decades to perfect. Read the words carefully when they arrive. Researchers, the tide is turning and your day of validation is nigh.
